Key purpose

The Coaching Research Lab at Case Western Reserve University is a joint initiative between scholars and leading organizations to advance the field of coaching through rigorous and relevant research.

1. Conducting research of publishable quality in peer-refereed journals

Faculty and colleagues representing the Organizational Behavior Department at Case Western Reserve University conduct coaching research and publish in peer-refereed journals including but not limited to: Leadership Quarterly, Social Neuroscience, Academy of Management Journal on Learning and Education, Journal of Management Development, Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, and Consulting Psychology Journal:Practice and Research and Organizational Dynamics.

2. Publishing research and theory on coaching (excluding self publishing) e.g. handbooks and research-based textbooks

CRL Research Fellows publish research, theory and application on coaching in a wide range of outlets including books, peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings and professional magazines. In one recent example, a research-based book, Helping People Change: Coaching for Lifelong Learning and Growth (Harvard Business Review Press, 2019) was published by CRL Founding Fellows Richard Boyatzis, Melvin Smith and Ellen Van Oosten.

3. Publishing non peer reviewed professional articles, reports and books e.g. coaching industry reports; articles in professional magazines; practitioners’ experience-based books

CRL Research Fellows aim to conduct and publish coaching research that is both rigorous and relevant. In addition to presenting at academic conferences and publishing in high-quality peer-refereed journals, research is regularly translated for practitioners and published in professional magazines, online newsletters and blogs. Some examples include: Harvard Business Review, hbr.org, Psychology Today, Training Magazine, and Greater Good Magazine. In addition, Research Fellows are popular keynote speakers and featured podcast guests.
