These professional membership organisations aim to define, create and promote best practice for their members working in the field of coaching. Some examples are the Association for Coaching, European Mentoring and Coaching Council and International Coach Federation. They provide a reference point for key elements such as standards, ethics and professional coach development. They also disseminate original coaching knowledge and research through conferences, member events and their own journals and research reports.

The Institute of Coaching is building the scientific foundation of coaching by inspiring, supporting, and funding coaching research. Our goal is to enhance the validity of coaching and its impact on individuals and organizations. We coordinate a global community of coaching researchers and set standards for coaching research. We welcome research proposals which employ quantitative and/or qualitative research methods to advance the theory, science, profession, and practice of coaching.
The annual Coaching in Leadership & Healthcare conference is offered by the Institute of Coaching, McLean Hospital, and Harvard Medical School. This event features keynotes in leadership, neuroscience, health and well-being, coaching, and human development. Breakout sessions give participants the opportunity to take a deeper dive into the science and art of coaching. We also offer research sessions and poster sessions which highlight the latest coaching science.
